Famous for its variety
The Lungau region is located in the most southern part of the province (Bundesland) of Salzburgerland in Austria.
It faces north towards the Pongau region in Salzburgerland with places as Flachau, Obertauern and Radstadt and the Ennstal region in Styria with places like Schladming. To get there you take the Tauerntunnel, Tauernpass, or the Sölkpass.
Southwards you'll meet Upper Carinthia (Ober Kärnten) with the Lieser and Malta valleys and places like Gmünd, Spittal am Drau, Villach and the Millstätter See. To get there you take the Katschberg tunnel, the Katschbergpass, drive over Schönfeld or over the Türracher höhe.
Going east you enter the Upper Styria (Ober Steiermarken) and drive towards Murau over the Preber See or Ramingstein.
Westwards you'll end in Muhr, where you can hike to the the spring of the Mur river at an altitude of 1898m or climb on to the highest peak in the Lungau, Größe Hafner at 3076m altitude.
From Schloss Lungau you have views on several peaks like the Preber at 2740m altitude. Take a hike to the summit of the Hochgölling at 2862m. For more convenience take the gondola in Mauterndorf up to Speiereck at 2072m and walk or mountainbike down to your residence at 1123m.
Schloss Lungau is located in Mauterndorf, an authentique Austrian Town in the middle of superd skiing area and loads of summer activities.

The supermarket or backery is only 2 minutes walk, as well as the skibus stop (5 minutes drive to the ski lift). Town centre with some 10 restaurants is reached within 5 minutes walk.
The great castle of Mauterndorf is only a stone's throw away. Enjoy this mediaeval fort or have a meal in the dungeon. It has special winter openings on tuesdays and thursdays.
Sun, sun and snow
The Lungau is known for its high average of sunshine hours (the highest of Austria). Due to its altitude (1100 m - 3600 ft) it hardly knows fog in spring or fall. The sunshine is quite intense on this altitude providing even in winter t-shirt days in the extensive garden of Schloss.
