Mauterndorf is a medieval town with some 1800 inhabitants inbetween the Tauern Alps at 1122m. height. The surrounding mountains reach up to 2863m (Hochgolling). Famous is the Castle build in 1253 where travellers had to pay toll (Maut) when crossing the Radstädter Tauernpass. Nowadays the castle is a must to visit and discover, especially child friendly. Sun, sun and snow
The Lungau is known for its high average of sunshine hours (the highest of Austria). Due to its altitude (1100 m - 3600 ft) it hardly knows fog in spring or fall. The sunshine is quite intense on this altitude providing even in winter t-shirt days in the extensive garden of Schloss Lungau.
In winter most guests like the sun, but not without snow. Due to its geographical location the Lungau enjoys both snow from the north, coming over the Hohe Tauern, as well as snow from the south, coming from Carinthia (the famous Aria-Lows (low presure weathers).
This provides always skiable slopes from in one of the 4 skiing areas:
- Mauterndorf - St Michael im Lungau: Grosseck-Speierck 47 km slopes - alt 1100-2400m (on just 5 minutes from Schloss Lungau)
- Obertaurn: Ski caroussel Obertauern 100 km slopes - alt 1740-2300m (on just 15 minutes drive)
- Mariapfarr: Fanningberg with 30km slopes - alt 1500-2100m (on just 15 minutes drive)
- Sankt Michael im Lungau - Rennweg - St Margarethen: Katschberg with 70km slopes - alt 1066-2200m (on just 10 minutes drive)
